And yes the humans are dumb as fuck in this but in an entertaining and endearing way... not in an annoying, I want to turn off the movie way. The director definitely got what's important about a Godzilla movie. The people in this movie are so dumb. Spoiler Leaving Kong chained was hilariously stupid. It was so bad that I couldn't even begin to wrap my head around it. The greatest dumb thing in this movie, though? Spoiler My man turning the ship's gravity engines into a giant defibrillator. It was the most beautiful, dumb, but awesome thing ever. I had to pause there movie to laugh. I loved this. I liked that we had Godzilla five minutes in and not dragged out into the middle of the movie. I love that Kong was the legit star of this movie, though now I need to know... Spoiler His ancestors could construct statues and buildings with doors and everything? How smart were these guys? The most surprising thing for me was how well paced this movie was. Sure, Wingard has had some great movies, but I want expecting a Godzilla film to work this well and at such a brisk pace. Five minutes in, I pause to get a drink, only to realize we were really twenty minutes in. Somewhere Snyder is trying to figure out why this movie isn't five hours long.

It really is a brisk and well paced movie because every scene serves a purpose. This film is probably the best paced of the Godzilla movies outside of SKull Island. That's why it works. Spoiler Kong's Ancestors were definitely smart as hell and I hope this is explored in more films. SOMEONE made that axe... and that throne seemed to be ringed with the bones of one of Godzilla's ancestors.
Zaku3
4 hours ago, Mercury33 said: I loved it. Like Skillz said these are hands down the dumbest most nonsensical humans to date. They sucked in the previous two Godzilla movies(I actually really enjoy them in Skull Island) but at least there was that sort of dark sense of mystery. This is just straight silly the whole time. The monster battles are incredible. The best on film to date. I just want to watch a 2 hour battle good lord. The score is brilliant. It reminded me of the scores from old 80’s fantasy movies and really added a sense of wonder to the scenes. Absolutely loved the music. All in all Skull Island is still my favorite. And I missed the dark brooding look from the previous two Godzilla movies. But the fighting, dear god the fighting is so fantastic. I hope they keep this universe going but if this was the finale then what a great send off. I hope they renew the license. Movie was so good. I would like to see Mechagodzilla go one on one with the Great One. Also I need more Rodan in my life.

LazyPiranha
Watched it last night. It was a decent watch, nothing amazing. I think the problem is that none of the subsequent movies have managed to find the tone or balance that Skull Island did. Skull Island managed to make the parts without Kong fun and entertaining and also managed to shoehorn in a metaphor of a real life parallel to tell a larger story as well. Sure it was absurdly goofy and over the top, but so was the movie which is what made it fun. King of Monsters wanted to have actual human connection and gravity to the story which is why it was so terrible, meanwhile Kong vs. Godzilla just kind of chooses to do neither. It's not winking enough to be trashy fun and it's not serious enough to make me give a shit about any human being. It has moments of that kind of screwball humor, but not enough. None of the characters are given enough time or personality for me to care about any of them and half of the cast seems to have been chosen based on accent to help keep them apart. More specific thoughts: Spoiler Hooooooooooly shit that conspiracy nut podcaster being the good guy has aged like milk left out in the sun in July and the movie isn't even a week old. That just reeks of a plot point written five years ago that had the misfortune of coming out now. That boat fight. Someone really liked Evangelion didn't they? Really the only moment they kind of managed to capture the spirit of Skull Island is when that guy's daughter is trying to escape the hollow earth and Kong just nonchalantly crushes their HEAV and kills them. Make more of that and less of rambling bleach bath guy. Also funny to me is just how quickly and meaninglessly they brush past everything required to make mechagodzilla a problem. Oh, we powered him up by using the hollow world power source. Not the actual power source mind you, that's still down there, but we downloaded a PDF of the schematic and that's enough to fuel this bad boy. Kind of like putting a nuclear physics textbook inside the heart of a reactor and having it work, but over the internet. Oh by the way, it's also got a dead kaiju brain supercomputer helping control it, a plan that obviously couldn't possibly backfire in any way at all. ort
This was the first one of these movies I have seen so I was a little confused about who a lot of these people were and why they were doing stupid stuff, but I quickly figured out that it just didn't matter at all. All of the stuff without giant monsters killing each other was really fucking terrible, but all of the parts with giant monsters killing each other were cool enough to offset all the rest, so overall this gets a thumbs up from me. They absolutely DO NOT MATTER. Complaing about humans in a Godzillla movie is like complaining about the quality of writing in a porn film. If you're there for the story you're doing it wrong

Regardless, there are ways to embrace the fact that human characters don’t matter and Kong vs Godzilla doesn’t. All the humans are boring their backstory and motivation are just brushed aside immediately and they don’t have a single interesting moment. Not to beat a dead horse but Skull Island showed you that you don’t have to care about the humans but at the very least their portion of the movie could be memorable and fun. In most of the "classic" Godzilla movies as well... the human characters in pretty much every Godzilla movie ar pretty much placeholder. I've been watching Godzilla movies since I was FIVE and can only really remember the storylines of like TWO human characters from any of the "classic" Godzilla movies and they weren't particularly good. Skull Island was the exception not the rule and they pretty much used a combination of Hearts of Darkness and Moby Dick as the template for that and it worked. Very fun movie even outside of the monster stuff.

Watched Godzilla yesterday... overall, pretty good... but very uneven... I feel like the first half of it, the human parts were so much better... but by the second half they were just phoning it in. The main character was not very compelling and seemed to experience no growth or have any sort of journey. It was a very weird choice to kill off you know who so early in this. Overall though, a fun movie. Looking forward to Skull Island and King of the Monsters... although we may watch them out of order... my kids really want King of the Monsters next and from what I gather, watching them out of order won't matter one bit. TwinIon
It was certainly the biggest and dumbest thing I've seen in a long while. It could very well be the poster child for "movie logic." There are a million things that make no sense, but are that way because the movie needs them to be. Thankfully there was plenty of giant monster fighting to make it enjoyable.
