Depends on how things turn out. If the Republican party splinters into the more moderate Republicans like Romney, and a new conservative party that's all about Trump with people like Hawley, Cruz, Gaetz, etc., but the Democrats stay together, it could allow the Democrats to stay in power, and possibly gaining power of Republican voters are split. I mean if a State goes close to 50-50 on Democrat to Republican, but then goes 50-25-25 on Democrat to Republican to Trump the Democrats win the State. Imagine Texas going Blue because the Reds got split between Republican and Trump.

I mean if a State goes close to 50-50 on Democrat to Republican, but then goes 50-25-25 on Democrat to Republican to Trump the Democrats win the State. Imagine Texas going Blue because the Reds got split between Republican and Trump. Things will be fucking great for one to two terms, as the Democrats will win every election thanks to the vote split. And then...things will get much, much worse. This exact situation has already happened to Canada, and it will likely happen in the US (but faster): In the 1993 Canadian federal election, the Progressive Conservatives went from a majority (156 seats out of 295) to 2 fucking seats. This is because the rightest-wing of the party broke off into the Reform Party, massively splitting the vote. Huge chunks of the Progressive Conservatives also split off in Quebec to form the Bloc Quebecois. The Liberals ended up with a good majority out of it, and ended up winning 4 elections in a row as a result of this. It was a golden time in Canada (well, not really because there were massive cuts thanks to the previous mismanagement of the economy and finances). But the Liberals were in power from 1993 to 2006, ushering in large progressive social changes (such as legalization of gay marriage, etc) and the prevention of Quebec separation, etc. Result of the 1993 federal election: (vote %, seat count (out of 295)): Liberals - 41.24% - 177 Reform - 18.69% - 52 Bloc - 13.52% - 54 NDP - 6.88% - 9 PCs - 16.04% - 2 Obviously votes move around and things can't be compared perfectly, especially for the Bloc, since some Liberals joined as well. But generally speaking, elements of the former Progressive Conservatives got 48.25% of the vote compared to the Liberals' 41.24%...and were destroyed because of the split. So that's a great thing, right? Sure, it was great for Chretien, who won three consecutive elections, followed by Paul Martin's one win. But during that time, the conservative element in Canada saw the writing on the wall: if they remained split, they would be stuck in opposition forever. The only solution was to merge everything back together. Only now, the Reform Party (then already changed into the Canadian Alliance) was stronger than the former Progressive Conservatives, who were a relic of a decade before. So when the merger happened, who do you think called the shots? The extremists. What followed was Stephen Harper (under the new "Conservative Party" brand) winning three elections in a row, from 2006 to 2015. Now, Canada has the Liberals (who have shifted left to stave off the social democrat NDP) and the Conservatives, who are far more right-wing than their predecessors, and have only continued to shift right. So when the Conservatives win again (probably not the next election, but a decent chance after that), Canada will get a more right-wing government than it has before. The same thing will happen to the US. Sure, people will laugh as the Patriot Party (or whatever) causes the right-wing to split the vote and lose the Presidency and whatever else. But the aftermath will be the GOP coming crawling to the PP begging to be let in (wanting power), only now in the junior position. Then the next GOP/PP President/government after that will be more extreme than ever.

All the data shows society shifting left over time, and the only reason Republicans hold on to power is through cheating and corruption, in a system that already heavily favors them. Because there were some real fucking loons on the primary ballot. Just bonkers. And I will probably end up doing the same. Republicans have been doing everything they can to win power despite being a minority. And they are accomplishing this via voter suppression, gerrymandering, and the regressive way the Senate is apportioned. Our system is designed to let a minority party muck it all up. The fascist evangelical white supremacist American conservative won't be losing power anytime soon, sadly.

Or this whole thing happens in totality. That would be many many years of being able to undo so much of the conservative sabotage to healthcare, and the ridiculous voting laws. Telling me how bad it’s going to be doesn’t really stick because has the party at all been improving in the past 10, 20, 30 years? Continuing being worse is always the expectation until proven otherwise IMO.
