  1. That was good, but you could tell it was an earlier one. Just felt a bit rough around the edges. Next up some nonfiction: The Summer of 1876: Outlaws, Lawmen, and Legends in the Season That Defined the American West
  2. May: I Shot Jesse James 3/5 I like Sam Fuller, but this was just kinda meh. Winchester '73 4/5 Bend of the River 4.5/5 The Man from Laramie 4/5 These 3 are Anthony Mann/Jimmy Stewart Westerns and they are so, so good. It's fun to see another side of Jimmy Stewart--he can be vicious, mean, wrathful, but also selfless and daring to become a new man. The Far Country (I watched that a few months ago), is probably my favorite of their collaborations (the deconstruction of the individualist hero is just incredible), but I really like Bend of the River. So fun to see a Western actually shot in the PNW! I've also been ruminating about an exchange between a settler and Stewart, where the settler bemoans the heel turn taken by a shopkeeper. The shopkeeper has denied the settlers the supplies they need (and have already paid for!) to survive the winter because of a new gold rush. He can sell the supplies to miners and make 10x the profits. The settler says that it's too bad, he thought the shopkeeper had been a nice guy. And Stewart retorts "He was...until they found gold." And I just found it to be such an incisive and insightful look at human nature; we all can be good, but we all have that potential to go bad if the circumstances are there. That exchange, short that it is, is really revealing of the Mann/Stewart Westerns, and how they get human nature (alright, that's enough about Westerns and I doubt anyone cares enough about the genre [but stay tuned, I'm planning on making a big post on Westerns one of these days]). The Wages of Fear 4/5 Diabolique 3.5/5 A nice pair of French drama/thrillers by Clouzot.
  3. My daughter’s daycare is on a one-way street. All the residents like to drive the wrong way to avoid 30 seconds of backtracking. I’ve trained my daughter to say “Wrong way! Bad driver!” when she sees one. Raising her the right way.
  4. I’ll copy and paste this from a tweet I saw: The Mariners had a decent offensive core that needed to be improved and Jerry Dipoto acquired: - The 7-hole hitter - The worst 2B in the league who is having a “reset” on the bench - A LHP-only platoon bat who’s hitting .150 - Tommy La Stella Bleak, especially since supposedly they are the most profitable team in the sport. They’d rather win 83 games without spending much than actually try to go for it.
  5. Yeah I'm looking forward to his new one too. Love his writing.
  6. Umpiring has been such absolute shit this year. It’s like all the umps are conspiring together to get robots to replace them.
  7. I think a lot of things rotate in and out for me. But I have a few permanent spots: Movies Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid Once Upon a Time in the West Office Space Goodfellas TV Seinfeld Curb Your Enthusiasm Deadwood 30 Rock
  8. Several people shot on Hollywood Broadwalk WWW.SUN-SENTINEL.COM Several people were shot Monday night on the Broadwalk in Hollywood, the mayor said. Happy Memorial Day gun owners!
  9. If you want to watch another incredible movie starring William Holden, may I suggest The Wild Bunch.
  10. I'm glad you watched it and liked it! It's one of my favorites (I'm still mad Rocky beat it for best picture [Network is better, deal with it]). It has some of the most adult writing I've ever encountered--I don't mean adult in the titillating way, but simply the way the relationships are written. Beatrice Straight is a goddess, and her 5 minute performance is one for the ages. Max's speech to Diana when he breaks up with her is another all-timer, and probably one of the most prescient: it strips bare how evil and demeaning the drive to succeed at all costs can be, when the price you must pay is your own humanity.
  11. Shane is so good. Damn. Can’t wait til my daughter is a bit older so I can read it to her. Will start an older one of SA Cosby’s, My Darkest Prayer.
  12. Staying with westerns, reading Shane, something I haven’t read since college. The movie is incredible of course.
  13. What their owner has done to the A's is just criminal.
  14. I'd be very curious what her name recognition is. The terminally online like us know who she is, but do the voters who will just tune in for the presidential race? And once she hits the bigtime, she is INCREDIBLY unappealing and if she is on the ticket will not do a thing to earn a single undecided vote.
