  1. I agree the CK to Gunn comparison was not especially good, I was just rolling at the time and mashed post. That said, for my devil’s advocate rant... I’m not saying people that fuck up should never work again, ever. That’s not rational or reasonable. I don’t really know what to do about it. To keep it with Gunn for a second, the remarks and behavior were stupid but I wouldn’t expect him to be blackballed, and I think his firing in of itself was probably a reach. So he gets sacked from GotG which sucks, since I liked those movies, but Marvel has this down to a science and GotG3 will be fine. Gunn will be fine. With someone like CK... I suppose I cannot begrudge him specifically for going back out and doing what he loves and knows even if I wish he’d stay out of the public eye forever. I can, however, give shit to someone like that FX guy I mentioned who “miss” Louie and his show. That’s what I meant when I said he’s not THAT special. NOBODY should be special enough for someone else in a position of power to “miss” someone who copped to multiple instances of sexual harassment. I don’t want Louie to die in a fire or never hold another job again. But I think that holding powerful people accountable for egregious abuses of power like what Louie did is absolutely “worth” a lack of “redemption,” for him, whatever that means. Again I wouldn’t want that to legally enforceable or anything, I just... wish he went away forever. I also think we need to be clear about what a “mistake” is. What Louie did isn’t a “mistake.” He was a borderline or straight up serial sexual harasser. One doesn’t do that “mistakenly.” I’ve said stupid things to women. I’m not expecting anyone to be perfect. Anyway I’m unfocused and rambling. I don’t even know what I want, I just get bummed out that there are dudes in power out there willing to go out on a limb to talk about them missing someone who has been “gone” for what feels like 15 minutes.
  2. But some of the framers were just pretty fucking smart lawyer guys so... fuck you? I’ve got nothing.
  3. What are you talking about? People absolutely push for more Indian, Hispanic, Asian, and Arab representation in movies.
  4. I honestly don’t know what a qualified presidential candidate looks like other than someone who was the governor of a state.
  5. I didn’t mean he’s not particularly special, again, he’s an incredible comedian. I meant that he’s not so special as to warrant “redemption” or a “comeback” from his behavior. I don’t even know what that means. He sexually harassed a bunch of women. How does one “come back” from that? A shitty apology and a rad comedy special? Fuck that and fuck him. He’s slime. I don’t know how else to say it. I want to see the death of a culture that tolerates sexual harassment and the gross application of patriarchal power. The least I can do is not give fuckwads like him attention (other than calling him out on his shit) and beyond that, money or views. I loved his comedy but I’m done with him.
  6. I've done ITT what I can to right the rep wrongs.
  7. Here's a post I made a month or so back about Blades in the Dark.
  8. Agreed. He whipped it out and beat off in front of multiple women. What else would you call it?
  9. He's a spectacular comedian and was one of my favorites. Nobody is so special as to earn a "comeback" from multiple sexual assaults.
  10. I don't have strong feelings about James Gunn one way or the other. But to play devil's advocate for a second... So hew grew as a person. So what? What of value are we losing by him getting sacked by Disney? There are tons of other talented directors who weren't 40 year old edgelords that got a kick out of rustling jimmies by saying stupid shit about pedophilia. And let's be clear, a lot of what he said wasn't "a joke," it was sent out into the interwebs with the express purpose of douchebaggery. /devil's advocate I'm honestly curious at the public's willingness to accept some people back into the fold. Again, Gunn's shtick was moronic but it was old, it was public, and the circumstances under which it was brought back to light were deliberately disingenuous. But with guys like whoever it was at FX saying how he misses Louie CK and his show... fucking why? He's a great comic but he's not so special as to warrant the public adulation and fiscal windfall tat a comeback tour or show is going to give him. If you're a grown ass man in a position of power abusing that to whip your dick out in front of people who think that non-cooperation is going to tank their career... it's fucking gross that someone is looking forward to his "redemption." /sidebar I'll see myself out.
  11. If you ask all of my ex-girlfriends other than one of them if I was the kind of person who would break up with them over the phone when they were at home from college and recovering from surgery, they'd all say no. One of them could say yes, though, and that doesn't make any of the other people wrong when they say that seems like it'd be out of character.
  12. Michael Avenatti, the attorney for porn actress Stormy Daniels and a fixture on cable news programs, says he is eyeing a potential presidential run. In an interview Thursday with the Des Moines Register, Avenatti said, "I'm exploring a run for the presidency of the United States, and I wanted to come to Iowa and listen to people and learn about some issues that are facing the citizens of Iowa and do my homework." Avenatti is best known for representing Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, in her lawsuit against President Donald Trump following an alleged 2006 affair, which Trump denies. Daniels is suing to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement that she signed days before the 2016 election. Avenatti is currently in Iowa because he is scheduled to speak Friday night at the Democratic Wing Ding fundraiser in Clear Lake. He told the outlet that his appearance was not an effort on his part to raise his profile. "I would never think to come to Iowa in order to use the state or the people of the state to raise my profile," he said. "And obviously if I do this, then I intend to work hard and I know that ultimately the trust of the citizens of Iowa is going to have to be earned." Avenatti added that he hopes people will take him "seriously," and that he believes the Democratic party needs "a fighter." President Trump has said he intends to run again. Former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders (VT), Sen. Cory Booker, (D-NJ), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and several others have been pegged as potential candidates as well, although none have announced official plans. Linkity link link. Someone please make sure @SFLUFAN is in a padded room before he reads this.
  13. I think the fact that this has been touched on well a few times by a few writers over half a century’s worth of continuity kind of makes my point for me. More seriously, I get that those stories are told, but they’re a side show compared to how the books normally roll. Which is fine, I think I’d rather die than try to balance a Marvel’s or a DC’s worth of continuity in favor of having individually rad books and arcs. I’m at the point in my life where the whole concepts of continuity and consistency in a comics universe is the most boring thing imaginable. But that’s some people’s favorite thing about comics I’m not saying it’s good or bad or that I’m right and they’re wrong, the “big picture” just doesn’t register to me as interesting. It’s why I like Homecoming and Ragnarok more than Infinity War, even though I like that, too. Doctor Doom is the only good thing about the Fantastic Four. Have they had an interesting story since the original Galactus arc? Only 43% joking.
  14. Hey I’ve been going FOB HAM as well. It’s good times.
  15. Personally I find the way that comics handle this to be inelegant at best. The public hates and fear mutants but is fine with non-mutant superhumans because... reasons? Johnny Storm was enhanced by cosmic rays as a teenager and is beloved while a rando X-Man with a mutation at birth who didn’t manifest their powers until the same age Johnny went into space is hated and feared? Each comic has to sail on its own wind so I don’t actually begrudge the writers for handling it the way they do, but mainstream comics handle this by ignoring or or getting cute once in a while when they’re doing a crossover.
  16. I enjoy their games too. I just can’t help but dream about how awesome it would be if the gameplay was on par with their aesthetic achievements.
  17. I think you’re underestimating the psychological impact of not having one $175 cable bill in favor of a $100 internet bill and 6 $20 streaming bills that don’t all come in at the same time. Sure, some people will do the math, but... eh.
  18. As someone who has only been to NYC intermittently in recent years, the subway system feels a little worse each time I go. Less well maintained, dirtier, etc. It’s still significantly better than it was when I went there as a kid, though. Hard to say if that’s an across the board thing or if it’s just where / when I happened to be.
  19. I’d also say that just about every American subway / city rail system is an embarrassment compared what you see in Vienna or London. And if you include Japan... forget about it.
