  1. @Brick I just saw this thread! My wife and I were in Montreal in April and loved it. Very beautiful, even just for walking around Old Montreal. Others have covered most things, but the additional restaurant I'd recommend is Green Spot. Good smoked meat sandwiches and poutine, but less touristy than Schwartz's. We also liked a BBQ place (American-style brisket, etc) on the waterfront called Lattuca. Might want to book a few days in advance, for that one.

Our least-favourite thing was the Science Centre. Strangely, it was worse than the one in Regina.

  2. I was never close to @stepee on a personal level outside the boards, but he was one of the nicest, funniest people here, and I always read his comments with interest. It's always a shock how quickly and without explanation or warning someone can leave our lives, especially with people we've been around for so long. We're now the old heads in terms of gaming internet culture, even if we don't think of ourselves that way.

Fuck, it's still not fully sunk in that I'll never again see that damn cute dog avatar on a new post. Completely unfair. Whenever anything is arranged for his family, @Commissar SFLUFAN, let me know, I will contribute.

RFK just said Donald Trump reached out to him weeks ago and they’ve had numerous private meetings recently. Trump asked RFK to drop out and join him, likely in a cabinet position.

As I understand it, this is also illegal (offering to drop out to receive a political position), but there would obviously be no consequences.

She said that on the Adam Carolla show (insert Obi Wan "not a name I've heard in a long time" meme).

PA court filings today indicate RFK is endorsing Trump. So, it's done. Probably announced in the next few hours.

  5. The right-wing (and honestly, many liberals') obsession with "the best" is pretty disgusting. Here is an example of how I hire:

    Three candidates:

    A - Meets 99% of requirements - White guy

    B - Meets 98% of requirements - White woman

    C - Meets 97% of requirements - Indian woman

Who should I hire? Many people would say "the best," which is the white guy. But how do you measure the best? Is it just some random metric like test scores, etc? No, it isn't. You also need to take into account personality, diversity of experience, etc. Having an entire team of people that are all the same is very bad and leads to groupthink. You want people with different cultural and other types of backgrounds to hep challenge decision-making, etc.

So maybe the white guy is the best (sometimes it works out that way), but if three people are all that close to the top, then there is a great chance that all three would be perfect for the role, and you have to include those non-metric factors when hiring. It's not "reverse racism" or anything like that.

My wife had to pay her school district back for missed days of work after giving birth. She was out the beginning of the school year until November and we didn’t get a full paycheck until February. Like even just not owing her employer money would have been a boon, but also they didn’t tell us about this until after she was missing school

As I work in a school division in Canada, I thought I would compare:

All staff (all canadians who are EI eligible) get 12-to-18 months off paid at up to 55% of wage (I think that % is correct). Can split that between either parent how you like. Our division then tops up to 95% of wage.

All parents deserve time off, and it should be a year at a minimum.

That's why the Senate is as important.

True, but the American people have a fetish for checks and balances, and so often will vote for the opposite party in their House/Senate race. Combined with how the Senate is ridiculously structured, and there is a real chance the Democrats never break 55 seats again. The best solution for Democrats (that I hope they take action on, should they even hold a 50-50 Senate) is the immediate statehood of DC and Puerto Rico (after removing the filibuster completely).
