  1. What's funny here is how often CG trailers are forgotten, or dismissed as being too far from release. But hey, they could always pull a Redfall and have Concord and Fairgame$ out in two years. Concord is actually announced as 2024 too. Get your hopes up, lol. The time for Microsoft to strike with big 1st party single player games was the first Xbox Series X games presentation. Let's just hope Nintendo's learned their lessons about console transitions as they say they have.
  2. You're right that I really don't care about the difference between a 'State of Play' and 'Showcase.' Because whatever they call it, there's a built in expectation of a big summer gaming event after decades of conditioning with E3 press conferences. This is when they're supposed to put their best foot forward, because if they don't, their competitors could. The only thing I'd downplay expectations for is when they themselves temper it. As they did last year, saying there wouldn't be much 1st party stuff.
  3. They've technically been having Sony-branded State of Play's every few months. So I'm not 100% sure what you're getting at. In terms of them having an 'E3' digital presser, which I think is what you mean, yes, people should expect more first party games. Not just CG trailers of 1st party announcements. Or cross-gen titles that do little to sell us on the new gen. Or coasting off DLC. The same applies to Microsoft, and will for Nintendo as they transition to a Switch successor. I don't think the industry as a whole has been very good at this since the PS5 and Series X were first announced. It's not just that E3 as an institution is dead. It's that there's no pressure to put on a big 1st party summer show when their consoles still sell boatloads regardless and subscriptions deals are a growing focus. Nintendo's probably been the most consistent. I suppose that because they still have to sell people on games that they don't devalue, they have a bit more reason to care.
  4. They had a show last year, but they managed expectations from the onset, saying it was focused on 3rd party and PSVR2. They should have said the same this year, if this was what it had to be. Oddly enough, they still had bigger 1st party announcements at Geoff’s than anything yesterday.
  5. Rather, these could be the games Microsoft couldn’t sign a GP deal for before release.
  6. Via Microsoft: There's a few notable omissions that may not come (MGS Collection, Phantom Blade 0, Sword of the Sea, expected ones like FFXVI). But it goes to show why you shouldn't make a console's press event a multi-platform showcase.
  7. The highlight of Sony's show for me. Fingers crossed most of the footage wasn't just target animations. Phantom Blade Zero: a new beginning in a long journey BLOG.PLAYSTATION.COM Studio founder reveals the origins and inspirations behind this hack and slash RPG.
  8. Yeah, I definitely want this to be a different game. But I also don't know how you make a new Marathon in 2023 and have it stand out from the pack.
  9. There hasn't been as much precedent as of late for Sony running with CG trailers. So jokes aside, it's not a good look. I wanted to be much more excited by Haven's project. If there was a reason to buy out the developer, we didn't see it today.
  10. We have different metrics of great shows for the console manufacturers. A wall list of all the great games coming from everybody isn’t what I look for. Especially not when multiplatform is the norm. Nintendo used to produce logo walls like this in their down years to distract from their problems. That should say it all.
  11. That’s fair. I won’t defend this show. Just call it out whenever you see it. All three of the manufacuters have been guilty of this before, and will be again.
  12. There, I bolded the games Microsoft didn’t produce (ie: fund and publish). And I striked out the one that wasn’t in the show. You can still like their show last year. I liked quite a lot in Sony’s show here too. There’s some cool stuff they also had little to do with as well. But as a console manufacturer’s presser, this isn’t how it should be done. Again, most of these trailers should be saved for Geoff ideally.
  13. It’s hard to keep a pipeline of big exciting stuff coming every year. None of the big three companies can manage it. With Sony, it was a matter of when they’d have to drop the ball to recoup. This was that year. It’s Jeff Grub’s fault for dubbing their show PS5 Phase 2 beforehand.
  14. You can keep saying it, it doesn’t make it true. Their last summer show was not excellent, especially not in comparison to truly excellent E3 showcases (Nintendo 2004, 2014, Sony 2015, etc). Some of their games released since have been good.
  15. Nope, it sure wasn’t. It had one more extended gameplay sequence than Sony’s (Starfield and … Redfall), Pentement, and a bunch more DLC announced. Beyond that, it was much of the same thing with 3rd parties bringing the fresh and enticing outside of the headliner. Far from excellent. But better than their average. Would have been better with Hi-Fi Rush. Nail on the head.
  16. This was pretty much a typical Microsoft conference outside of Spider-Man 2. Yup, I said that right. New IP from new studio announced with a CG trailer. Legacy franchises brought back with CG trailers. 3rd party showcase of games that could be really awesome, but may have little to do with the platform holder. Updates on games we’ve already seen too much from already. Many previously teased projects not shown. As a show it was an okay watch. And I’m glad PSVR2 wasn’t oversold. But if that and the new hardware wasn’t part of it, I think could have been a great Keighly show for the industry as a whole. And that defeats the whole point IMO. So many of these trailers could have been saved for him. So now we’ll get to complain about that next. Thanks Sony.
  17. Hate it when new IP gets announced with a CG trailer. Especially from a new studio.
  18. I almost decided not to watch this live because Zelda had its hooks in me. Almost.
  19. It goes to show that whatever Microsoft says about not being able to compete, they've never truly been in a position to fail. If Phil never took over, it still would have ended better for them than the Wii U.
  20. Perhaps, I know definitely on the gaming side. I’ve been in the wrong here before, but if I’m not seeing it, I don’t easily roll over. But in my limited time with the politics board, things can get so emotionally charged with so much fuck-the-other-side that when perspectives are challenged, it’s no fun for anyone. It’s not just here. I tend to avoid politics discussion on the web. I’d rather just watch some honest to goodness debates on Youtube with proper academic formatting and moderators.
  21. I think I’ve walked away from the politics board before here, lol. Maybe that says something. I mean, at least with gaming, people act more mature about the name calling and flaming nowadays.
