General Gaming Indie Games Discussion and Recommendations

I'm surprised there's a sequel, so soon as well. Good for Ludosity! On that note, here's another indie platform fighter update roundup.

Yes, there is now. When Digital Foundry posted it, they were ahead of other outlets and the general public. As they often are. It's pretty common for media outlets to post twitter video previews ahead of their edited coverage proper. Speaking of which, its also commonplace for indie game developers sharing progress update clips. Not everything makes it to Youtube. He'd have to clarify. But I don't think most twitter videos would apply in the same manner as this case.

Footage of a next gen game running on the Deck is enough to warrant more than a screen grab. Nothing is a given on that platform, and how good/poor it is can be in the eye of the beholder. Going through the effort to screengrab it so someone can go search it on the site itself to watch is asinine. Actively discourages sharing something interesting. For all I care, D1P is doing nothing to stop Elon from making money off twitter. He’s burning it to the ground and killing it just fine himself. If it’s the principle of the matter, there’s probably even more reason to ban Reddit, with its history of questionable and exploitative subreddits and recent 3rd party apps policy that kneecaps their moderation. But of course that’s off the table, because we can’t point to a cult of personality running the show. Without a head figure to rally against it’s just not a big deal apparently. I’m not for censoring any of these sites here for the record. If truly appalling content is linked to, that should be for moderation here to act upon. Until then, I say let bygones be bygones and let the egomaniac ride out his sinking ship.

General Gaming What are you playing today?

Beat my first PG today in ToTK. Should have attempted it sooner, much easier than I expected. -
I can think of several games with exploits that function this way. Muta stacking in Starcraft 1. Snaking in Mario Kart DS. Wavedashing in Smash Bros Melee. Combos in Street Fighter 2. Most recently, a bunch of unintended uses for particular items in Tears of the Kingdom (see: elevator rail). A vocal group of gamers will always complain about them not being played as intended, especially the multiplayer ones. In the best of cases, maximization exploits can actually address balance issues and genuinely make them more fun to play. The only downside then is no in-game tutorial, and a steeper learning curve typically. I just booted up Mario Kart DS yesterday to reconfigure some overlays/shaders in Retroarch. It feels so bad just to go straight. Snaking takes it from a decent game to a great one. Pushing the mechanics to fit in that one extra boost is the most fun part of it. I don't even think 8 recaptures the fun of it entirely.

Sony PS+ Essentials August free games

It’s good. More combat focused than Zelda, a bit more like the Soul Blazer trilogy in some ways. Don’t bother 100%-ing it. -
Nintendo Pikmin 4 (July 21, 2023) - reviews from OpenCritic posted

I'll be getting on it after I complete Zelda, which could take a while. But I'll be back to this thread when I do. -
Kind of a dumb take. Making every console version of Games Pass include multiplayer would simplify things, but it wouldn't take away the larger hypocrisy of that chart. Namely that PC multiplayer on their network is free. Also, Microsoft isn't triple dipping. They're not your ISP. In a some weird way, the "Console" tier is for people like me who could be temped by a subscription library, but refuse to pay for multiplayer. So maybe it's good that choice exists. Still, being more expensive than PC for less stuff is some BS.

GPU equivalency and fidelity cuts don't get to the heart of the discrepancies here: Spider-Man Remastered runs at 1440p60 native on a 2060 S at PS5-equivalent RT settings. PS5 upscales to 1440p60 dynamic. So at 1440p with RT, if the optimizations are similar, we'd expect the difference between PS5 and 2060 S to be roughly the difference of Insomniac's upscaling technique. If the pattern held, we'd be seeing 2060 S as another console level benchmark with RT for Ratchet. Call it the missing "Good Raytracing" column. And it should theoretically hit 1440p native at console settings, given that Performance RT still targets 1440p upscalled on console. Instead, the chart reads that a vanilla 2060 is recommended for 1080p60 native at medium settings with no raytracing. There's something very screwy about that IMO. Could be DirectStorrage related. We'll see soon enough what's up.

Yep, there's more going on with RT on PC. Console will likely be a step below Amazing RT with missing features. But targeting a dynamic 1440p60 is still a best case scenario for a console SKU with it. I'd expect the PS5 version to be preferable to the "Recommended" PC config as stated. Unless DLSS2 can reasonably take that PC build to 1800p60.
-
The latter is definitely true going by Spiderman. But performance RT on PS5 (the only mode anyone should be using) still targets an upscaled-to 1440p, the same as Amazing RT in the spec sheet. Dynamic drops probably put it on average a bit lower than that. Also, the 1620p-1800p window that performance mode on PS5 hits at 60fps is above High. Granted, that's upscalled, and I'm sure PC is doing more in other regards with that config. @best3444

Quoting Wccftech's review: Yes, yes, yes. It sounds like caves aren't randomly generated anymore like in 2. It was novel at the time, but this is better. That's actually a positive. They got to be such a slog by the end. Fantastic.
