  1. Other rumors floating around now that its running DLSS 3.1 That'd be pretty insane if they got DLSS 3 in there. Might actually make portable better than dock play for people without a VRR TV.
  2. Saying Nintendo "had better" make a more powerful handheld is reminding me of the PSP vs DS days, lol. You're probably expecting too much. The Deck is already as powerful as a last gen console for its resolution, and is more capable feature-wise. I wouldn't expect a new Nintendo machine to be a sizable improvement. I could see it being weaker on paper but DLSS doing more legwork. The Deck's currently competitors are, frankly, a poor value. You spend a lot more money for a bit more performance. Partly because Windows is a bloated OS on a portable.
  3. That's the thing that's most up in the air. It'll have the better upscaling solution on paper. But there's not enough to say how much it could affect battery life, cost, etc. Other handhelds will definitely brute force past it. The larger question is where it falls next to the Deck.
  4. I'd expect some Switch 2 games to target upscalled-to 1080p on the TV. DLSS could make that look marginally better than native 1080p, by the metrics in that DF video. But it's not like it would appear close to 1440p. As for looking better on TV than FSR2 games on other consoles, probably not. If anything, maybe in select cases where a FSR2 implementation on Series S is so bad that it'd look better at a low native resolution. What was "suggested" is that this is killer for portable play. We don't know anything about the screen yet. But even something like 480p upscalled to 900p could yield incredible results, given what DLSS is good at.
  5. You're significantly underselling DLSS here, at best. Conflated it with FSR 2's shortcomings, at worst. The situation is much better than that. This is mainly a problem today with action games like Jedi Survivor on consoles, relying on FSR 2 to reconstruct from ~720p to 1440p or ~1080p to 4k. A 60fps target can help, but it's no magic bullet. FSR2 is a more reasonable facsimile in its 4K Quality mode, scaling from 1440p to 4k (ie: Starfield). The lower the target/base resolution and the quicker the action, the more trouble it has. DLSS at lower resolutions, by comparison, can present a better than native presentation upscalling from 540p to 1080p. Its actually more capable of producing a comparable image when trying for lower resolution targets. Almost like an inverse of FSR2's use case. That's all before you count in the perceived IQ benefits gaming on a smaller screen. This is precisely why a Nintendo handheld using it has been so exciting. On the other hand, that could just mean Nintendo does Nintendo and uses it as an excuse to cut corners elsewhere with the hardware.
  6. Just a handheld with DLSS 3.5 running would be wild and probably unrealistic. Still, we're talking N64-like resolutions being upscalled from for portable mode. And DLSS is way better at that than FSR 1 and 2.
  7. My thoughts when I beat it 3 years ago:
  8. Sources: Nintendo showed Switch 2 demos at Gamescom | VGC WWW.VIDEOGAMESCHRONICLE.COM The company is understood to have held private tech demos, ahead of an expected 2024 launch… Now this sounds exciting, if true.
  9. Know how everyone thinks Earthbound is some amazing game? When in reality it’s kind of boring? Undertale is actually worthy of that hype. There’s one minor character I find cringey in a bad way (ie: leans too hard into weeaboo), but that’s the worst I can say about it.
  10. Finishing up more caves across the map before tackling the Gerudo corner and its towers. Think I'll finally start taking on Gleeok's now, since they're guarding some of them.
  11. Very random month. Lots of odd bundle grabs on the cheap from Fanatical, pricing error with MK11 for $2, and FFXVI from the giveaway here. I've always been mildly curious about the Aserisx and Obelix games after seeing videos of GBA miracle ports.
  12. I feel like this year, more than any other, warrants a look into the fuller rankings: Best Video Games of 2023 OPENCRITIC.COM Browse the top rated games of 2023. The top critics in gaming. All in one place.
  13. I think it’s great that we’re seeing so many top tier games across different genres. Everyone’s having a blast regardless of where their interests lean. And for all the big games, you have a Dave the Diver, Future Connected, Vernal Edge, etc It’s going to take me forever to try it all, so I’ll just be starting with what appeals to me most on the surface.
  14. No full on cry for me either. But definitely teary eyed at To the Moon. The big Chapter 5/6 sequence in Xenoblade 3 got me there as well. They knew full well what they were doing in both those games.

  16. That sounds fair. Though it should be said that some of the latter is volunteer work. It's still an imperfect solution on either end. Providing any of them funds for one thing frees up resources for other initiatives. Including lobbying for their ideologies and preferential treatment.
  17. Health providers =/= resource centers. Or shelter. In my experience, it's the religious pregnancy resource centers without any particular affiliation that are the craziest, because there's no standard to go by. I met a counselor at one who said don't kiss, because that just leads to lust, which just leads to sex, which just leads to babies. (yes, that'll surely convince someone to keep a kid and not shame them...) They also had truckloads of stuff they were handing out because people donated to them like crazy. If they could just kick that lady out. I suppose I also blame the younger workers a bit. They'd just roll their eyes at it instead of speaking up.
  18. So they're diverting that money into other pregnancy resource centers and women crisis shelters, right? ... Right? I've seen some truly awful pregnancy resource centers. I've also volunteered at some truly amazing ones. But in either case, those resources are relied upon by women and families of all stripes, who would consider, wouldn't consider, and have had an abortion. I remember once loading two boxes of pots and pans and a new bed for someone who was forced to move out from her ex, no questions asked. The Democratic response shouldn't be to take away local resources for mothers. Prioritize the things that improve the situation for struggling families. Universal Pre-K. Paid Maternity leave. And yes, local resource centers. Vet them if needed. Create more run by the state. Post-Roe, there's no hiding behind abortion politics to address the need.
  19. I think music and dance have the highest hurdles personally. There’s a smugness associated with ‘high’ forms of them today that is aging the audiences outside of Nutcracker and Messiah. You know who has it the absolute worst? Living composers in the “western art literature” tradition that don’t latch their work onto other popular media like games, film or musicals. Very few people break through otherwise, maybe just Whitacre and Pärt. Literature is another. But in the US, you must have at least some comprehension of the ‘high’ forms of it to graduate high school. Maybe that’s actually turning a lot of people off to it, but the exposure is there. Then again, imagine having your kid tell you they want to write poetry for a living.
  20. In some mediums more than others. Video Games are in a pretty good place in that regard.
  21. Someone saying that what I do is high art? If that’s their main takeaway, I played poorly.
  22. Fuck out of here with that noise. You shouldn’t want your medium to be viewed with a waft of superiority, because of how many people that will alienate. - Signed, classical musician with doctorate in piano
  23. 'Super Mario Bros. Wonder' Is What Happens When Devs Have Time to Play | WIRED WWW.WIRED.COM Because Nintendo’s upcoming Mario game had no deadline, its creators were able to experiment with new styles and move from the Mushroom Kingdom to the Flower Kingdom—with delightfully trippy results.
