  1. Time Spent: ~2 hours Rating: ***½ /4 I haven't seen any 2d platformer do cinematics quite as well as this. It's a little stilted feeling like its inspirations (PoP, Another World), but given the purpose of this thread, it warrants a high score regardless. I'll be going back at some point.
  2. Time Spent: ~10 hours Rating: **** /4 One of the better platform fighters out there. If you haven't played it yet, you should. Music bumps like the Megaman X series, which is also part of the draw. Platform fighters are better in 3D, so I'm looking forward to the sequel with expanded mechanics (ie: blocking, not just parries).
  3. Time Spent: ~3 hours Rating: *** /4 A more than decent roguelike I don't have the time for. Power-ups feel a little unbalanced, and I dislike that a dodge-invincibility roll is a prerequisite for survival. But there's a reason this game is well known in its genre. Multiple classes are a nice touch. It's a game that's more fun to watch than play IMO.
  4. Got the latter in my 32-bit+ list, I'll be giving it a try as part of this.
  5. Time Spent: ~1 hours Rating: * /4 When it came out, it tried to bill itself as Zelda 2 with a bow. It's incredibly rudimentary, tedious to play, and generally feels like it didn't need to exist.
  6. Time Spent: ~3 hours Rating: ***½ /4 Slick little game from what I tried. Metroidvania with dual arm grappling hooks, and slash bouncing that might feel better than Hollow Knight. Only apparent downside is that the artstyle makes the different zones blend too much together.
  7. Time Spent: ~4 hours Rating: ***½ /4 Completed A time loop game for OCD people. Reminds me a lot of Turnip Boy, but is the better game of the two. If you enjoyed Link's Awakening or simple, short adventure games, play it.
  8. It's been years for me since I played one, and I've yet to play an indie one. I think the last I tried to get into was Legend of Krandia? An Adventure game where you can actually die, lol.
  9. Time Spent: ~4 hours Rating: **** /4 Completed Still one of the absolute best indie games out there. It's a Metroidvania-lite with single screen challenges. The variety of platforming concepts are the real draw, the pacing is perfect, and the physics are fun.
  10. Time Spent: ~5 hours Rating: *** /4 Baba is You is a brilliantly original game. But like The Witness it makes my brain hurt, and I can only take so much push block puzzles. Play it, enjoy it while its fun, don't try to beat it.
  11. Time Spent: 15 min Rating: ** / 4 Perfect example of a great sounding game on paper not panning out. A level based 2d platformer with a world map, Super Mario World style, with great art and animation. But WTF, please don't kill all my momentum in the air with my basic sword swing. It feels awful. No game should do this ever.
  12. I recently sorted my random (mostly bundle trash?) indie pixel art games into fake 2d consoles. I'm thinking of dropping 5-10 minutes into these every now and again to see if any are worth playing, or if I mislabeled any. Perhaps within a few months to a year I'll get through most of them. (... more will get added, so who am I kidding) Beaten a couple, played my fill of others, but most should be fresh. The list: 8-bit: 16 / 19 16-bit: 82 / 88 32-bit+: 94 / 132 Retro 'Recharged': Rating Scale: **** - Will return to ***½ - Would like to return to *** - Could be fun to try again **½ - Functionally fun, not super enticing ** - Quite flawed or bland, with some redeemable qualities *½ - Semblance of fun, but very flawed * - Hot Garbage I've beaten some, so in those cases, it's just a short review. Other takes: Neon Abyss (stepee - ***)
  13. Leaks and rumors have illustrated Naughty Dog doesn't jive well with outside studios handling their IP. Putting it to rest if they can't do it themselves is the right call.
  14. The Crew takes you and your friends on a wild ride across a massive, open-world recreation of the United States that is loaded with exciting...
  15. I beat it on Wii U. You should play the Switch version if you at all can. The dips in towns are a bit too much. You're also getting a resolution cut from 900p to 720p. Plus they don't sell the DLC on Wii U anymore if you'd be interested in that. I'd hold off for Switch 2 at this point.
  16. Says I only put 9 hours into Returnal. It feels like 30 with the intensity of it, lol. I beat half of it, I kinda feel scared going back at this point.
  17. It's good, sometimes great, never amazing. I have to credit Nintendo for not fumbling the level design as a single player game, when it's designed to work in multiplayer. It's the game's biggest triumph. The level design rarely feels like it's missing something, or has too much blank space, which was my biggest worry. There's things in New Super Mario Bros Wii that were probably fairly fresh at the time for the 2d series. Floating bubbles you swim in, swinging ropes, propeller hat, blocks that spawn enemies, throw-able barrels, many more platforms that rotate, fireballs destroying ice blocks, etc. As a negative, it draws from the franchise well just as frequently for one-off moments. Yoshi's you can only use in the levels they're designed for, chain link background walls from SM World are used sparingly, the occasional mini mushroom from NSB DS, etc. The "hey remember this from this better game" is a bit too strong with the SMB3/World references. The boss fights in this one are pretty great though, even if they draw on koopaling tropes. It's a much better game than either of the DS ones (I beat the first, but got too bored with the second). 8/10 2023 Games Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - 8/10 Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - 7.5/10 Xenoblade 3: Future Redeemed - 9/10 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 9.5/10 Marsupilami Hoobaventure - 8/10 New Super Mario Bros Wii - 8/10
  18. They do a digital showcase. Unlike the 3rd party publishers, they have little to no presence on his own show floor with demos. I find that most ironic in Nintendo's case, who is supposedly a company all about 'play.' The first playable reception of BoTW on the E3 show floor was the turning point that fed into the Switch's success.
  19. FF7 Rebirth is at the top of my list, and will be one of the few games I buy new. I've been dark on it since the first trailer. I'm also interested in seeing how Prince of Persia Two Crowns and Visions of Mana pan out. And this little indie game: And Silksong and Hades II, of course. What else are you interested in? Anything you think people here are sleeping on?
  20. Keighly won. I hope for better participation from the big 3 at his events now.
  21. They had something good going with the secondary weapon upgrades in SS. I’d want to see that return in place of Fuse and other breakable weapons. And rethink equipment upgrades please. Have less of them, no more amiibo filler.
  22. Working on the last boss of NSMB Wii right now, I'll be done with it soon. I've heard Deluxe is better?
  23. I'm all for free Switch games, but these look pretty trashy tbh. Worse than similar giveaways in previous years, which were already suspect.
