How far are you in now? -
Finished the Hat in Time DLC. The Arctic Cruise is a smaller level than base game ones, but the first challenge zone kept me going for quite a while. Second one was cakewalk. Hat in Time is still as charming but cluttered as I remember it. The camera really doesn't work well in tight spaces, which leads to lots of unintentional wall sliding. But if you're okay with a little jank in your 3D platformers, it's a good time. I checked out some of the mod levels too. Pretty great in-game implimentation, and if you enjoy the base game there's more than enough there to continue tinkering around with. It’s sometimes surprising how good they look.

One time piece away from finishing the Hat in Time DLC. Love this music from it, it’d fit naturally in Mario Odyssey.

Good excuse for me to wrap up Uncharted 4. I feel off the train at the ‘open’ part a few months ago, but I would like to see it to completion. God of War is another… but that PS5 patch might make me wait until I pick one up someday. I’d also like to try Hat in Time’s Seal the Deal DLC. Owned it forever, but the itch for cheery 3D platformer vibes is getting me and it sounds perfect. I won’t do the ‘Deal’ challenges part, which are just stupidly difficult speed run trials from what I hear. There’s another DLC as well which reviewed better, so this is also a test for if I’d get that. Beyond those two, we’ll see. I just started Monster Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, but only enough to demo it really. Haven’t touched Paper Mario: Origami King in a month, but it might be too long for something like this. At least for me. I might pick something more random and niche instead to share about. That’s how I found Supraland last year.

Which is why sharing revenue numbers alone isn't quite enough. It does illustrate that Series consoles are still in high demand, and Games Pass is retaining subscribers after promotional periods. What I'd really like to know is how much MS is spending on Games Pass licensing deals compared to Epic's freebies.

General Gaming What are you playing today?

Monster Boy: The Dragon Trap today. Sometimes simplicity is a good thing. I’ve never played a Master System game before, but I really like the upgraded art style and don’t think the retro visuals hold up so well. -
Sounds a lot better for that than Midgard.

Nintendo The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword HD [Jul 16, 2021 ]

Sounds like someone who wanted it redone as a traditional Zelda so they could pretend to forget the history. The game never needed to be remade to his preference. It’s not that game. I’d much rather see more of the pacing issues fixed if greater effort was spent. -

PC What games are you excited to play on the Steam Deck?
crispy4000 replied to DPCyric's topic in The Spawn Point
Splatoon series is probably the best online multiplayer thing they’ve got. I would have bought 2 by now if they weren’t charging for online. I could see Switch being a decent F2P multiplayer device if you’re okay with not being on competitive footing in cross play. -

They would have to remove Retroarch from the Steam store for your gut to not be totally of the mark. And even that would only be a connivence thing, since Valve has already stated you’ll be able to run 3rd party apps and OS’s not on its storefront. Just like on Steam machines years ago, or how the PC app works now. The only real deterring factor will be if you’re willing to download ROMs or rip them yourself. Think of it more as a Linux laptop with a handheld gaming form factor and UI. -

Uh, no they won’t. It’s an open platform. You can install Linux applications on it. You can install Windows on it. You can install Retroarch directly from the Steam OS itself, similar to Android devices. -

Nintendo changed chip manufacturers from AMD to NVIDIA from the Wii U to Switch. Doesn’t make backwards compatibility impossible, but it’s probably less automatic than it’s been for Nintendo platforms in the past. There’s also the need to optimize for undocked mode. I fully expect what Nintendo platform that comes next to have backwards compatibility with Switch. Most of their modern platforms do go back at least one generation in the launch model. With Valve entering the hardware space and putting so much into Proton, I’d say they win now. The sheer number of games that should work on the Steam Deck, even as is out of the box, should be unreal. Steam Deck will also be the only modern dedicated gaming platform where online gaming is free … which I also view as a compatibility feature. A lot more old game servers are still are up on PC as well. -

If I was buying one, I’d play most of my indie pixel art games that way.
