General Gaming What are you playing today?
crispy4000 replied to CastlevaniaNut18's topic in The Spawn Point
I enjoyed that game too, beat it two years back. Wish the combat was a little better, but I still have good memories of it on the whole. -
I got thinking about this with Sonic Frontiers lately. Sega's stood by it having high metascore hopes, though the preview reception so far is mixed. The game could be as bad as the negative previews suggest. But if it ended up being a genuinely good... would most reviewers today see it that way on release? Or is there too much nostalgia-fueled baggage to make anything less than a Generations/Mania sequel palpable? Honestly curious what games this board remembers that pulled a 180 with the press. This is the biggest I can remember: And more recently... Just to clarify, there's been plenty of turn around stories post-release. Those are a dime a dozen nowadays. Not what I'm referring to.

I kinda liked Other M when most people hated it. And I'm A-ok with motion controls. So yeah, I'm curious. Plus this genre is already pretty much dead. -

Panzer Dragoon Remake. As someone who never played the original... this holds up. I might be crazy, but it's giving me an itch to try out Star Fox Wii U next. -

Does it show it in stock through the website for your store? They’re probably forcing bundles anyhow. -

Made it to the 'Wily Stage' in 20XX after a run with a lucky powerup. That's where I'll stop, considering how ridiculous it would have been otherwise. 20XX falls pretty hard into the genre's pitfalls of throwing too much at you. I watched a video of the last boss after deciding I was done. He forces unavoidable damage on you during his stance transitions. Fuck that. -

Yeah I 100% forgot about that one. Know it didn’t review well, but I’ve always been curious. -

Waiting for Xenoblade 3 has done wonders for reducing the backlog. I'm tearing through a lot of games knowing that it's going to suck up my spare time soon. Dicey Dungeons is still a lot of fun. Playing through more of it now that I heard there's an update. I'm currently working my way through all the characters. It's comes pretty close to Slay the Spire for me, which says a lot considering how much I enjoyed that game. Also tried 20XX a bit today. It's addictive and a decent homage to Megaman, but doesn't control quite as well as the X games thanks to the shorter dash. There's too many bottomless pits in the randomly generated levels, but they only takes away one health point thankfully. I'll continue with it for a bit, it's still one of the better Rogue-likes I've tried. Luigi's Mansion 2 on the side as well on the 3DS. I'm fine with it being a slow burn. -

I can't remember it ever being in the spotlight. Other than being a silly game to put on Stadia. -
Not going too indie here, since that could be endless. But feel free to add your own.

One of the better "walking simulators" out there. Call of the Sea takes inspiration from Edith Finch, Firewatch, Abzu, and a dash of Myst/Witness. But its setting, a vibrant and mysterious South Pacific Island set in the 1920's, is wholly unique. So are the main character's motivations, to search for her husband and cure a mystery illness. It's a great setup from the start. Puzzles can be challenging, but mostly boil down to translating symbols you see from one format to another. The main character will jot down any pertinent clues, so you can simply look at the notebook to piece it together. The story also held my interest throughout. It doesn't let the mysteries become the ultimate point of it. It also doesn't try to take them back either, as some of the above games do. I found that refreshing. Only downsides are that there's still a few too many dangling plot threads, the movement is a bit too slow, and performance fluctuates at different points of the game. PC version needed more graphic options to address this, and even the console versions aren't perfect from what I've read. 8/10 2022 Death's Door - 8.5/10 Torna: The Golden Country - 9/10 Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion - 7/10 Mail Mole - 7.5/10 Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair - 9/10 What the Golf? - 8/10 Greak: Memories of Azur - 8/10 Psychonauts 2 - 9/10 A Hat in Time: Nyakuza Metro DLC - 7.5/10 The Last Campfire - 7.5/10 The Stanley Parable - 7/10 Call of the Sea - 8/10

Call of the Sea, I'm having a good time with it so far. I really enjoy its vibe and setting. Anyone who liked Edith Finch would appreciate it, though it's not quite on that game's level. -
Nintendo Bayonetta 3 (10/28/2022) - reviews from OpenCritic posted
crispy4000 replied to Brian's topic in The Spawn Point
So for the rest of 2022, Nintendo's got: Xenoblade 3 - July 29th Splatoon 3 - September 9th Kirby’s Dream Buffet - Summer Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope - October 20th Bayonetta 3 - October 28th Pokemon S&V - November 18th (Dragon Quest Treasures - Dec 9th - timed exclusive?) This is the best back half of the year for Switch since 2017. -
Multiple ending simulator, the game. I don't think I view it the way it intends to be. If every ending is directed, then it's probably better to have fewer of them to not waste the player's time. Once the gimmick was clear to me, I jumped on Youtube and scrubbed through the rest. For the majority of them, the choices and journey that led to them aren't compelling. 7/10 2022 Death's Door - 8.5/10 Torna: The Golden Country - 9/10 Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion - 7/10 Mail Mole - 7.5/10 Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair - 9/10 What the Golf? - 8/10 Greak: Memories of Azur - 8/10 Psychonauts 2 - 9/10 A Hat in Time: Nyakuza Metro DLC - 7.5/10 The Last Campfire - 7.5/10 The Stanley Parable - 7/10

Not a game, but I got a WD M2 1TB drive w/ heatsink for $80 after some Prime Day discounts. Eventually I'll build a new PC, so it's more so I'm ready for that, and to upgrade my current boot drive capacity. PS5 compatible too, in case I ever go that direction with it. -
