Nintendo Xenoblade 3 [July 29 2022] - reviews from OpenCritic posted

These games are massive. But that‘s part of the appeal. If there’s one major flaw 3 has the others don’t, it’s that it’s so easy to be overleveled, to the detriment of its class system. Don’t level up at camps unless you want to beeline it. (which also feels wrong to do in this game)- 423 replies

It’s definitely not required knowledge. It’s also nowhere near the level where XB2 took it by the end, expanding the first game’s end narrative in a truly bonkers way. What I appreciate about XB3 is that references are subtle and sprinkled more consistently. Mainly in the environment design and some character names and attributes. XB2 didn’t even hint at a connection until Malos started using Monado arts more than 2/3rds of the way in.- 423 replies

Just finished Chapter 4. Nice mix of predictable twists and cameos with a genuine surprise. It's the first time I felt like knowing the previous games will play with your head a bit.- 423 replies

It’s the worst part of the UI for sure. Is Sena’s the one with criss cross patterns? Whoever has that is just terrible to read.- 423 replies

To be fair, that's pretty much what I use the Steam UI for these days. Idle, sell cards, get free games in Summer/Winter sales. It takes a lot more work than Epic. I mostly interface with my games from Launchbox. Steam is quite bad at being a central hub if you have a lot of launchers. It's opened the door for other programs to fill the need.

Elsewhere on the skill tree? It's a bit convoluted. You can have an upgrade for a skill on the complete opposite end of it.- 423 replies

I’m not a fan of the nopon regardless. At least in the first game they were introduced as a more grounded part of the world, later into it. XBX and XB2 both had too much cringe with them. XB3 skirts the line at times, but doesn’t go overboard.- 423 replies

Spider-Man feels so close to great for me. But yeah, I also remember now how awful the trick system was (maybe MM addressed this)? Combat was actually more fun for me that the slinging, and that’s the opposite of what I expected.

It's really not good at precision movement and judging heights of swings, IMO. Some of those challenge missions flying through rings after drones really highlight the issue. There's been a lot of recent games with great movement too. Hades, Splatoon series, Titanfall 2, etc.

This could be my own shifting perspective, but as someone who’s mostly stopped buying games when they come out, day and date is overrated. Waiting a year to play a game typically won’t make you enjoy it any less. In fact, it’s often the optimal way to experience a game, after all the performance, content and balance patches. It’s still a strong bullet point for comparison for MS. I won’t take that away from it. But as someone just finding a PS5 now, the PS5 back catalog on the Extra tier might as well be brand new games. The later in the gen someone jumps in, the more that rings true. I’m still too cheap to subscribe though. Going to wait for Black Friday to try Returnal, MM, etc. If Sony or Microsoft 1st party games ever start holding their price like Nintendo's, I could change my tune. Last gen, they fell like bricks.

Can you back up that TLOU2 claim? It sold quicker out of the gate than the first. Only 10 million vs 17 million LTD, but that's including the first's (first) remaster, and all those extra years of sales it had at the bargain bin. Horizon FW wouldn't surprise me... but mainly because of Elden Ring. If all this was of significant consequence this gen for the mainstream gamer, demand for PS5 would wane substantially. Sony's position would be closest to Nintendo's with the N64: higher game prices, smaller library, less incentives. If history repeated itself, they'd be selling 1/3rd of their competitor, not even 1/2 as the Xbox One did. Given the demand today, I don't foresee it playing out in that manner. I also don't think MS is willing to take the competitive moves needed to kick Sony down that hard (ie: keeping CoD off PS5 altogether). There's also the question of how much Sony's playbook is actually hurting them. It's not as consumer friendly to delay release of their first party releases on PS Extra/Premium and PC. But if console or game sales on PS5 don't slow much as a result, they get to have their cake and eat it too. PS Extra/Premium are priced cheaper than Games Pass Ultimate though. And the biggest difference between them is the products.

Welcoming Games Pass would cannibalize revenue of their own subscription services. As long a they’ve got the choice to keep MS out, they will. Long term, MS has changed the rules of engagement. But let’s not forget that the best selling console of the last generation was built on games that seldom ever sold below $40 on sale. I’m convinced most people will continue to pay full price at launch (and beyond) for AAA games that aren’t available any other way. Everyone will continue to buy their GTAs, Final Fantasys and Elden Rings. And no doubt, Sony properties too. Microsoft went all in. It’s their way to fight back to the top. But we aren’t going to see God of War 2 selling less this year because of it. I think the pricing strategies of the boxes themselves will play more into who ‘wins’ this gen this time.

There’s no mishaps close to that this gen, or even the $599 PS3 days. The Xbox One showed the reliance of Microsoft’s brand in spite of serious failures out of the gate. Not even that led to it being a Wii U of a flop. Playstation is much of the same. Heck they survived $599. Neither Sony or Microsoft have had the rug pulled out from underneath them, except for PS3 in Japan perhaps.

“It can.” You all should be asking of its equivalent or better. My understanding was that the Deck’s CPU is a limiting factor in many emulated Switch games. That and emulator progress/optimization. Gotta run that Wii U version of BoTW for instance.
