  1. At least 74 killed in wildfires in Greece. The worst wildfire to hit Greece in over a decade tore through a small resort town near Athens on Monday afternoon, killing at least 74 people, injuring almost 200 and forcing hundreds more to rush on to beaches and into the sea as the blaze devoured houses and cars. Huge, fast-moving flames trapped families with children as they tried to flee from Mati, 18 miles (29km) east of the Greek capital. Among the dead were 26 people whose bodies were found huddled tightly together close to the beach, a Red Cross official said on Tuesday morning.
  2. Official website First-person thriller The Occupation (from Ether One devs White Paper Games) looks like an exciting spin on the immersive sim genre. Playing as a journalist in 1987 England, there’s sneaking, talking and even a bit of Deus Ex-ish crawling through vents to be done in search of the truth behind a (presumed) terrorist bombing. Unlike most games, the entire story plays out over the course of four real-time hours. Either you get to the truth and make your choices by then, or the government will pass a restrictive new set of laws unopposed
  3. The Los Angeles Police Department announced Tuesday that one of its officers fired the bullet that struck and killed a Trader Joe’s employee in the frantic moments they exchanged gunfire with a suspect in an attempted murder case over the weekend.
  4. Demi Lovato was hospitalized on Tuesday for a reported overdose on heroin. TMZ reports that the 25-year-old singer was transported to a hospital and is currently being treated. Law enforcement tells TMZ that she appears to have suffered from a heroin overdose.
  5. CORPORATE welfare queens. The "family farm" died decades ago to be replaced by large-scale agribusiness.
  6. "You can play the way you want by adjusting difficulty independently for puzzles, exploration, and combat to easy, normal, or hard." Having exploration on 'hard', for example, will remove the white paint that indicates a useful handhold or ledge when climbing. Huh - how about that?
  7. Israel has shot down a Syrian warplane flying over its airspace over southern Golan, according to its military. The Israel Defense Forces tweeted that two Patriot missiles were fired at the Syrian Sukhoi fighter jet, which it said was one mile inside Israeli airspace.
  8. There is no way in hell an effectively "pure" streaming device will work with the American broadband market.
  9. Police quickly tracked down Saylor after he was identified as a suspect, nabbing him at his parents’ home where he lives in the basement.
  10. Batman: The Animated Series is coming to Blu-ray in its entirety later this year with remastered visuals. The Blu-ray release will get a deluxe limited edition box set (which is currently available for pre-order) that’s stuffed with special features, creator commentaries and additional content.
  11. 20 mercenaries will land on a pretty planet to complete quests, tussle with alien wildlife, and maybe murder each other a bit across 20-minute rounds in The Cycle, a new multiplayer FPS coming from Spec Ops: The Line and Dreadnought studio Yager.
  12. In May, Wizard of the Coast announced that the Magic: The Gathering would be returning to the plane of Ravnica. Three related card sets will carry the classic collectible card game into its 26th year. Now, it’s announced a formal crossover with Dungeons & Dragons called Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica. The $49.95 hardcover sourcebook should be in stores on Nov. 20. It will include everything that fans of the original tabletop role-playing game need to explore the world of Ravnica, including classes, races, monsters and setting information on its ten opposing guilds.
  13. The game will use Green Ronin’s AGE system, marking the first time that roleplaying system has been used for sci-fi. It’s currently on a Kickstarter campaign, with hardback books clocking in at $50, and has quite predictably passed its initial funding goal of $30,000. The campaign ends Wednesday, August 22nd. 15. The controller that came with my launch PS4 absolutely suffered from this condition within a couple of months.
  16. And to show how well they researched this, Comey and McCabe lost their clearances when they were fired.
  17. Actually, our position is more accurately described as "the right to defend one's self using means that contain a reasonable expectation of lethality."
  18. This is a very valid point and I would say that in a scenario where the State has the theoretical monopoly on violence, then lethal acts of self-defense directed at those agents of the State carries more legitimacy than lethal acts of self-defense directed at non-State actors.
  19. My argument against the "right" of lethal self-defense in deference to the State's monopoly on violence isn't as much a "progressive" argument as it is a "fascist" one. It's a argument based on the "insignificance" of the individual relative to that of the State.
